Analysis of the SSPX's Decree of Excommunication and Explanatory Note

Part I

Part II

Following the Society's illicit episcopal consecrations on July 1, Rome responded by not only declaring the Bishops to have incurred latae sententiae (ipso fact) excommunication, but further declared that the priest and laity who formally adhere to the Society incur the same grave censure.  The DDF issued an accompanying explanatory note further clarifying that all the SSPX clergy are considered Schismatics and excommunicated, as are the laity who formally adhere to the Society (the presumption of guilt in the external forum is consistent with canon 1321.4), according to the conditions set form in the 1996 explanatory note issued by the PCILT.   The decree and explanatory note confirm exactly what we have been saying for the past seven years.   In addition, the laity who formally adhere to the Society are not only deemed to be Schismatics (in the external form), but there is now a formal process required for them to be received into the Catholic Church. All this is covered in Part I and Part II.
